Frequently Asked Questions
Who can apply?
The Magis Society is designed for emerging adults, mainly in their 20's, however we strongly encourage application by those ranging form their 20’s through their late 30s, newly graduated from college or taking a break from an established career. We are glad to consider applications from adults of any age.
Do I have to be an Anglican to apply?
No, we welcome Christians from all denominations and traditions (asking that you be baptized and affirm the Apostles' Creed and the Nicene Creed). However, an essential part of the fellowship is participation in the life and worship of St. John’s Canton. Your acceptance is an invitation to enter into Anglican spiritual practices for nine months.
How much does the program cost?
Tuition is $6,000, which includes all of the program components (course of study, retreats, and one-on-one meetings with a tutor, coach, and spiritual director). We will assist you in finding affordable rent (see question below). You will be responsible for your own living costs and the cost of books (approx. $400).
Is this just a gap year program for recent college graduates who don't know what career to pursue?
No! Members are encourage to recognize that from those who are established in a clear career direction to those who have no idea what career to enter next time with the society will strengthen you clarity of call. We welcome you to join us, whether you know exactly where you're headed next or not. If you already have a plan in place, we believe you'll still benefit by preparing through study, prayer, and discernment.
When are applications due?
Applications are now open. The deadline for applying for the 2026-2027 cohort is the Feast of the Ascension (May 14, 2026). Applications will be processed on a rolling basis so the earlier you apply, the sooner you’ll hear back from us!
Where will I be living, and what will that cost?
We will endeavor to help you find shared affordable housing in the Canton area, often with another fellow or someone from St. John’s Church. Plan to spend about $550-600 a month plus utilities for a shared two-bedroom apartment or room in a community house.
When are payments due?
Once accepted, a $500 non-refundable deposit is due within two weeks of your acceptance to secure your spot. $3,500 of the remaining tuition is due on August 1, and the final $2,000 is due on January 1.
How many members do you accept each year?
The size of each cohort is at the discretion of the admissions committee, typically between 5 and 8.
Is this a full-time program, or will I have the chance to work?
The Magis Society is a (hefty) part-time program, leaving you enough time to work a part-time job on the side. We strongly encourage members to apply for 15-20 hours a week of part-time employment in the hours not dedicated to coursework, retreats, etc.
Is there a cost to apply?
There is a $50 non-refundable fee due at the time of application (to cover the cost of a background check)
I'm married, can both my spouse and I apply?
Absolutely! We highly recommend spouses apply together, as we anticipate that sharing in the spiritual disciplines and theological study of the Magis Society would be transformative. To help make it feasible for both spouses to be members, we are excited to offer a scholarship for those who apply concurrently. Scholarship opportunities vary from year to year, please contact us for details. We will be glad to help you find affordable, private housing in the Canton area.
When does the Society year start and end?
While the start and end dates change slightly each year, the Magis Society runs from late August through early May, with breaks for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Spring Break.
Is there financial aid available? Can I raise funds?
While we don't have financial aid available, we invite you to raise funds to cover some of your tuition costs. We have fundraising resources we can send you upon request.
